CKO Volkswagon Tin Windup Flip Car (or KdF) *SOLD*

CKo Volkswagon Tin Windup Flip Car KdF

Our CKo or Georg Kellerman company tin car is officially considered the “Cabriolet Convertible Car 358″ and at 6.5” long.  The hand painted figure inside the toy is revealed once the flip switch on the bottom transforms our hardtop into a Cabrio.  It is a transformer! The car appears to based loosely on Germany’s KDF Car for the people (pre-volkswagen). Later incarnations which became model 359 officially change the grill over to a Volkswagen.

The red lithograph is in good condition with rub marks as shown.  The Right rear tire has touchup to part of the tire.  The driver is in original condition and is in very good to excellent condition, an oft-lost part.  The highlights of gold lead us to believe this is an earlier version, prewar, as later models use paint rather than the gold accents.

The car is powered by a strong clockwork windup and still powers across a floor.  We have a more appropriate key with a single hole in it that will be supplied.  Sorry, it was pictured with the incorrect key.

CKO or Georg Kellerman and Company was based out of Nuremberg and ran from 1910 to about 1979.  He ws a former Karl Bub employee and then founded his own company.

Wikipedia has a very interesting explanation as to why these were KDF cars at first… then Volkswagen toy cars later:
On 26 May 1938, Hitler laid the cornerstone for the Volkswagen factory in Fallersleben. He gave a speech, in which he named the car Kraft-durch-Freude-Wagen (“Strength Through Joy Car”, usually abbreviated to KdF-Wagen).  The name refers to Kraft durch Freude (‘Strength Through Joy’), the official leisure organization of Nazi Germany. The model village of Stadt des KdF-Wagens was created near Fallersleben in Lower Saxony in 1938 for the benefit of the workers at the newly built factory.

Volkswagen had only just started small scale production, building about 210 Beetles, before civilian production was halted at the start of the war. Except for two military prototype units, these KdF sedans were allocated to military officers as personal cars. Hitler was given the very first convertible Beetle built in 1938. Both 704cc and 984cc air-cooled engines were fitted in these early units.

These toys are rarely offered for sale, so it is a pleasure to bring this one to our readers.
