Incredible Marklin Gauge 2 train for sale

Our toy is made by venerable tin toy maker Marklin of Germany and comes in the very large Gauge II.  The clockwork works well and has a break.  The windup handle is present to make this a great set.

Paint condition is approximately 80% original and under black light we find overpaint where there were chips.  This is a normal practice for such fragile hand painted toys that are over 120 years.  This German toy was likely made circa 1899!

The 0-4-0 configuration has slightly larger front wheels as compared to the rear ones.  It is an oddity that makes it very early.  It appears brass gears work this mechanism.

We have to emphasize how much custom painting was done.  There are about eight pinstripes around the boiler. The cab is hand pinstriped.  Dark green and black paint were used throughout.  Brass is used.  Then silver and gold colors are also hand painted on.

The German clockwork is very strong and works well along with the brake mechanism.

History:

Märklin released its first wind-up train with carriages that ran on standardised track in 1891, noting that railroad toys had the potential to follow the common practice of doll houses, in which the initial purchase would be enhanced and expanded with more accessories for years after the initial purchase. To this end, Märklin offered additional rolling stock and track with which to expand its boxed sets.

Märklin is responsible for the creation of several popular model railroad gauges or scale, noteworthy exceptions being N scale and Wide gauge. In 1891, Märklin defined gauges 1-5 as standards for toy trains and presented them at the Leipzig Toy Fair. They soon became international standards.
