Unique Art Manufacturing Company Rap & Tap in a Friendly Scrap Tin Litho Windup Toy Boxers for Sale

Introducing, the tin windup “Rap & Tap in a Friendly Scrap” made by Unique Art Manufacturing Company out of Newark, New Jersey.  This piece has nice lithography with boxing scenes illustrated around base. This has a built-in wind mechanism and a start/stop switch. There are two boxer figures on a wire that when wound up the boxers move up and down and in a slight circular motion. The boxers stop when lever is turned upward and starts slowly when pushed down. This toy was patented in 1921 as shown on the base. This piece is approximately 5” x 5” x 7”. It does not include its box. It has an original fork that comes with it and a replacement one should it ever need it. The toy works and is in excellent condition for its age. It does show slight signs of age and play, but that’s to be expected with such old and neat toys.

A little history on Unique Art Manufacturing Company:  Unique Art Manufacturing Company was an American toy company, founded in 1916, and based in Newark, New Jersey.  They made inexpensive toys, including wind-up mechanical toys, out of lithographed tin. This toy is one of its early products. Unique’s president, Sammy Bergman, was a good friend of toy magnate Louis Marx, and the two men’s companies at times cooperated, with Marx providing tooling to Unique and sometimes acting as a distributor for Unique’s products. Unique Art’s eventual fate is unclear but the company appears to have disappeared by 1952, with some evidence of Marx picking up the line.
