1930’s Marx Toys “Mechanical Donkey Cart” Tin Lithographed Windup Toy with Box

This is a ca. 1930’s tin lithographed windup “Mechanical Donkey Cart” manufactured by Louis Marx & Co. of New York City, New York. This item is dead stock with original box that is in great condition. We shrink wrapped it to keep it nice for display. We have seen these displayed with barrels and so we think this may have originally had some small barrels, but we cannot be certain. However, for fun we threw in some produce sacks so that this man and his donkeys had something to haul.

When wound with its dedicated key, this harder to find version goes forward with both mules making a bulking motion. It has the original driver; however, he does not have any reigns. The windup works as it should and the cart moves forward nicely.

Our example of this Marx “Mechanical Donkey Cart” is in excellent all original condition with no restorations, repairs, breaks or touch ups. The lithos on this piece show very minimal of the usual patina, chips, scuffs, scratches, and wear that are normally found with age and play. It is approximately 10″ L x 6″ H. A brief history of Louis Marx & Company of New York City, New York:

Louis Marx and Company was an American toy manufacturer in business from about 1919 to 1980 founded in New York City by Louis & David Marx. Its products were often imprinted with the slogan, “One of the many Marx toys, have you all of them?” Arguably, Marx was the most well-known toy companies through the late mid-20th century. Best known for their lithographed tin windup toys Marx was also one of the big four among American electric train manufacturers. An interesting fact is that Marx also successfully revived the Yo-Yo in 1928; it sold well even through the Depression.
