Althof Bergmann ca. 1800’s Tin Pull Toy Horse with Jockey on Belled Platform *SOLD*

Althof Bergmann ca. 1800’s Tin Pull Toy Horse with Jockey on Belled Platform

We have for you a ca. 1800’s tin, hand painted horse and jockey on platform bell pull toy manufactured by Althof, Bergmann & Company of New York City, New York.

We are pleased to share this horse with jockey on platform pull toy with you. The horse and platform have had to be resoldered to put this lovely item back together in its original condition. The tail has been faithfully restored as when we got this item the tail was missing. The bell and gong are present, and the toy rings as you roll it across a flat surface. It is a beautiful and artistic item begging to be shown with pride or to be a decorator’s piece.

Our piece has paint loss and darkening, but the toy is quite original and comes our way from a barn find. As you may know, their paintwork was never meant to last and much of the painting was done with home brewed or very primitive mixtures that didn’t always stay stable. Those who collect tin toys from the 19th century recognize how challenging they are to find now. Most were recycled or thrown away.

For its age, our example of this horse and jockey on platform pull toy is in great original condition with the exception of the afore mentioned breaks, restorations, repairs, and touchups. This piece shows the usual patina, dust, chips, scuffs, scratches, surface rust and wear that are to be expected from age and play. It is approximately 14” L x 12 ½” H. We invite you to view the photos to further determine quality and condition.

A brief history of Althof, Bergmann & Company of New York City, New York:

Althoff, Bergmann & Company was formed in 1867 by three brothers whose last name was Bergmann and a casual “jobber” named L. Althof. Althof Bergmann was in business from 1867 to 1880.

The company started with importing various toys, but very soon they started producing their own toys. They specialized in tinplate trains, bell toys, still banks, and horse drawn vehicles. Althof Bergmann was one of the first U.S. toy makers to build carpet running trains, and renowned for painted clockwork toys, notably the hoop variety.
