Blériot Airplane tin windup by Oro (made by Fritz Reil or R& Co of Brandenburg) *E-Museum

Our windup plane comes from Alan A. Reznik a-la-Allentown, PA.  The attribution is important, as this is the same toy used in his “Toys of Fritz Reil- Reil & Metz, Reil & Co., Oro of Brandenburg” book.  It is time to adopt it out.

Note that Attributions of Oro (toy works) added to Brandenburg gives an improper OROBR name.  It works, but it just isn’t a full and proper attribution.  Use Oro line of toys from Reil and Company of Brandenburg.  -Or just smile 🙂

The plane comes to us in original condition and needed a dusting.  Otherwise it was very well kept for over 100 years of age!

It has been added to our E-Museum as a way of sharing such a great toy design. It is simple, but the plane (made around 1918-1920) was designed to suspend from a ceiling.  Then the kid would hold the gear or propeller shaft & wind up the front crank.  Let the toy go and it would circle around the room on a tether.

Wings spring closed for storage (or toy packing and space savings).  The wheels turn and, most importantly, the likeness to the Blériot plane is excellent for such an old toy.

The Blériot XI is a French aircraft of the pioneer era of aviation. The first example was used by Louis Blériot to make the first flight across the English Channel in a heavier-than-air aircraft, on 25 July 1909. This is one of the most famous accomplishments of the pioneer era of aviation, and not only won Blériot a lasting place in history but also assured the future of his aircraft manufacturing business. The event caused a major reappraisal of the importance of aviation; the English newspaper The Daily Express led its story of the flight with the headline “Britain is no longer an Island”.
