McLoughlin Bros. Pussy Cat Ten Pins Game *SOLD*

McLoughlin Bros. Pussy Cat Ten Pins Game

This fetching cat toy is something that cat loves will cherish.  It is a very early, likely 1890’s McLoughlin game known as “Pussy Cat Ten Pins”.  The paper lithography and artwork is spectacular and condition very good for such an old paper toy.

The cover has been framed on its own with a restored corner to showcase the gorgeous cover artwork.  The yellow ribbon wearing plumed hat cat seems to be meowing for attention (and a buyer).  The eyes indicate something mischievous is about to happen!  Sides of the box top have fallen off, but the owner may have two or three of them stored away.

None of the original ten pens are present with wood stands.  Condition on them is good with slight fading from age.  Again, as with all paper toys of the 19th century, they just don’t survive.  So these may be considered very good for their age.  One rubber ball comes with the set.

Box is approximately box 11.25″wide x 20″ tall then with a frame.

Note that the National Museum of Play in Rochester New York has this same set.  They state “For centuries, people enjoyed the game named variously bowling, nine-pins, jeu de quilles, or skittles. Egyptians indulged in a form of bowling by 3,200 B.C. King Henry VIII banned lawn bowling in 15th-century England because too many tradesmen neglected their vocations. Washington Irving immortalized nine pins in his 19th-century tale of Rip van Winkle. By 1900, Americans formed formal bowling associations to play the game competitively.”
