GE Clock by Hubley Toys *SOLD*

GE Clock by Hubley toys

Fresh from our shop is the beautiful GE fridge.  It is a clock, it is a fridge, it is a functioning piece of art!

General Electric saw the trends coming, as ice boxes would see go the way of the dinosaurs.  So they chose to invest and heavily promote the new concept of electric refrigerator/feezers.  They also chose to make it semi-affordable instead of a luxury good.  Our Hubley toy is actually a promotional item for GE.

Back in the Twenties Kelvinator dominated the market with its wooden cold box and compressor combo cost $714 (nearly $9,800) – way beyond the pocket of the average household. So, with the goal of bringing more affordable refrigerators to the masses, General Electric ploughed $18 million into making the GE ‘Monitor-top’ fridge.

They were called Monitor-tops because the cabinet was all steel and the condenser was sealed in a cylindrical enclosure on top, which made it look like the turret from a 19th-century ironclad warship – the USS Monitor.

Our clock was a promotional item when customers purchased the fridge.  It came with the first self winding electric clock company mechanics– Telechron.  GE actually acquired a large share of ownership in the company, so the co-branding makes alot of sense.

Our clock works and keeps excellent time.  The back button hole and front circle is a mystery to us.  The clock has been restored to an antique white color as most have aged to.
