A brief history of Dent Hardware Co. Fullerton, Pennsylvania:  

In 1894, three men formed Dent Hardware Co. in Newark, New Jersey, and shortly after moved to Fullerton, PA. The partners were Mr. Kaiser, Mr. Newhard, and Mr. Dent, grandfather of the founder of Dent Manufacturing.  

They ran a very successful company and during the 1920s were the nation’s leading manufacturer of refrigeration ‘Ice Boxes’. The company was also a major manufacturer of iron children’s toys. At its peak in the 1920s, Dent Hardware Co. employed over 400 people.  

In 1955, the Dent’s sold out to the Newhard’s and founded Dent Manufacturing Inc. in Northampton, PA. The manufacturing facility was built in three stages, in 1956, 1960, and 1962, growing to a size of 22,000 square feet.  

Dent Manufacturing Inc. was owned and managed by Henry H. Dent and William Swope, a pattern maker and owner of Swope & Bartholomew Pattern Shop.  

In 1972, Douglas Dodge of Syracuse, NY joined Dent Manufacturing in an engineering position and became General Manager in 1975.  

In 1985, Henry Dent sold Dent Manufacturing to the Dodge Family and a small portion of the company to several employee and supplier stockholders.  

In 2007, Dent Manufacturing restructured the company under the name Dent Design Hardware.  

In 2009, Dent Design Hardware revamped its online shopping platform. Customers can find and buy hinges, handles, magnetic door hardware, pull handles, latches, traps, ventilators, and related accessories — all from their computer!

This substantial cast iron “Transfer Wagon” by Dent was placed with the right home.  The three horse wagon feels close to 9 pounds with heavy horses times three at front.

In the back of the wagon is a 19th century “pick up truck” of the time .

Condition is original and excellent, with the toy dating to around 1910.

Dent ca. 1910 Cast Iron #122 Pony Cart 

We have for you a ca. 1910 cast iron #122 pony cart that was manufactured by Dent Hardware Co. of Fullerton, Pennsylvania. 

We went over this piece and could not determine if the black had been repainted or not. The factory tended to produce these pieces with almost sloppy paint work, that matches up with what we are seeing, but we couldn’t be certain.   

This piece is in great possibly all original condition with no breaks, restorations, repairs, or touch ups. These pieces show the usual patina, fading, dust, chips, scuffs, surface rust, scratches, and wear that are to be expected from age and play. This is approximately 4” L. We have for you an antique ca. 1910 cast iron horse and stake wagon manufactured by Dent Hardware Co. of Fullerton, PA.

This is a cast iron stake wagon with horse. The wheels are on solidly and work as they should. The wagon bed bottom is made of sheet metal. There is also a broken stake on the right front side.

Our example of this cast iron stake wagon is in all original condition with no restorations, repairs, or touch ups. The paint is in great overall condition with the usual dust, patina, scratches, scuffs, surface rust and chips that are seen with age and play. It is approximately 10” L. We have for you an antique ca. 1910 close to mint cast iron horse and stake wagon #126-1 manufactured by Dent Hardware Co. of Fullerton, PA.

This is a three piece cast iron stake wagon with horse and driver. The wheels are on solidly and work as they should.

Our example of this cast iron stake wagon was an attic find that is in near mint all original condition with no restorations, repairs, breaks or touch ups. This is an incredibly nice example where, like with gems, these near mint details are so difficult to find.  The paint is in near mint overall condition with the usual dust, patina, scratches, scuffs and chips that are seen with age. It is approximately 12 ½” L. We encourage you to examine the photographs to further determine condition and quality.

How often do you get a toy and then an actually brass pattern of the toy?  This is a unique offering and one that we won’t mind holding onto.  It is a Dent cast iron pattern in brass, hand adjusted, that is sold with an actual production toy.

When you inspect this pattern, you can see the very sharp cutting and honing on shapes and forms to get a less crisp impression in the final toy.  It is truly exacting and a treasure.

Each toy comes with tires, but the pattern was likely put together and tires were later added for display.
