Vintage Kuramochi Shoten (CK) Comic Character Henry and Brother Celluloid/Plastic Windup Toy Japan

This is a wonderful vintage celluloid wind-up “Henry” and his Brother, made by Kuramochi Shoten\Kuramochi & Co., Ltd. of Japan. Our very bright and very high condition Henry and Brother is set of winners. Both of these windup toys are new old stock with very little to no wear on the wheels. Henry even has his manufacturer’s sticker on the leg. Then his base has a “Carl Anderson Japan” sticker still affixed. Henry also has a “Made in Japan” stamp embossed on his back that shows a dragonfly marking over that.

We see these rarely, and just haven’t seen them in this high of condition for ages. When wound with its dedicated key, Henry pulls his brother along behind him. The wheels are angle in such a way that they go in a circle. The windup mechanism works as it should.

Our example of this Henry and his Brother celluloid windup is in excellent, near mint, original condition with no breaks, restorations, repairs, or touch ups. This piece shows the usual patina, dust, chips, scuffs, scratches, and wear that are to be expected from age and display. Henry is approximately 5” ¾” H and his brother is 4 ½” H. A brief history of the character Henry by Carl Anderson:

Henry was a comic strip created in 1932 by Carl Thomas Anderson. The title character is a young bald boy who is mute (and sometimes drawn minus a mouth). With the exception of a few early episodes, the comic strip character communicates only through pantomime, a situation which changed when Henry moved into comic books.

The Saturday Evening Post was the first publication to feature Henry, a series which began when Anderson was 67 years old. The series of cartoons continued in that magazine for two years in various formats of single panel, multiple panels or two panels.
