Who doesn’t love a good bear toy? Waltrous, later absorbed by Gong Bell, produced some stunning cast iron toys mounted on steel frames and this one is a prize.
This bear bell toy has a very striking casting and iridescent paint. According to bellboys.ning.com, the pattern for this bear was expertly casted and found at the JE Stevens factory. The detail makes sense!
Much of the toy had a nickel or copper wash finish, so when highlighting and paint were later added, it produced a beautiful iridescent quality. -See the frame colors pop.
Paint on this toy is exceptional for a 100 year old item. The one bell is a loose fit, as the shaft wasn’t fully peaned over. The pull string may be original and the steel structure and wheels show some corrosion. Overall, for the age, the toy is in very good to excellent condition.
Often the paint on these bear toys faded or come in two tones. Here we have three hand painted colors and a very desirable color combination.
