Antique ca. 1933 Marx Mechanical Tin Lithographed Windup Oldtimer Landau Coupe Toy Car w/ Battery Operated Headlights *SOLD*

Antique ca. 1933 Marx Mechanical Tin Lithographed Windup Oldtimer Landau Coupe Toy Car w/ Battery Operated Headlights

We have for you a ca. 1933 tin, windup, lithographed red mechanical oldtimer Landau Coupe manufactured by Louis Marx & Company of New York City, New York.

This great Marx coupe is constructed of brightly lithographed tin, and features two battery powered electric headlights that are switched on/off via the lever in the cab. We did not test these as we didn’t have the right size battery and did not want to blow the lights. The trunk has a large Marx trademark on it. The toy features a dedicated windup key on the right side, and when wound it drives forward. The mechanism works as it should. We noticed that at some point someone put a silver painted wooden dowel in the hole in the back to act as an exhaust pipe/muffler. We aren’t sure if this previously had anything there when it was first manufactured or if the hole was just there for some other manufacturing purpose.

Our example of this mechanical red oldtimer Landau Coupe is in great all original condition with no breaks, restorations, repairs, or touch ups. The lithos on this are still bright and in great overall condition. This piece shows the usual patina, dust, chips, scuffs, surface rust, scratches, and wear that are to be expected from age and play. It is approximately 8” L x 3 ½” W x 3” H. This would be a great and impressive addition to any collection. We invite you to view the photos to further determine quality and condition.

A brief history of Louis Marx & Company of New York City, New York:

Louis Marx and Company was an American toy manufacturer in business from about 1919 to 1980 founded in New York City by Louis & David Marx. Its products were often imprinted with the slogan, “One of the many Marx toys, have you all of them?” Arguably, Marx was the most well-known toy companies through the late mid-20th century. Best known for their lithographed tin windup toys Marx was also one of the big four among American electric train manufacturers. An interesting fact is that Marx also successfully revived the Yo-Yo in 1928; it sold well even through the Depression.
