Bassett-Lowke O Gauge Steam 6660/0 L.N.E.R. 2-6-0 “Mogul” Model Express Locomotive and Tender with Train Cars in Box

This is a O Gauge steam 6660/0 L.N.E.R. 2-6-0 type “Mogul” Model Express Locomotive and Tender and train cars set all in boxes that were manufactured by Bassett-Lowke of Northampton, England.

Our train set is nothing short of spectacular. It is a new old stock set purchased just after the war in Nuremberg, Germany.  It could have been prewar stock brought to the toy capital for their toy fair.

The provenance is that our set was purchased there for the American Oil families in Saudi Arabia.  The original childhood recipient held it for decades and then settled in Sarasota, FL.  The set was brought to us new old stock.

We have a 2-6-0 set of steam engine locomotive and tender 42980 variant, along with three cars.  Each item is boxed. The term “Mogul” refers to the generic 2-6-0-wheel configuration

In this set are:

  • 6660/0 L.N.E.R. British Rail Ways 2-6-0 type “Mogul” steam locomotive and tender
  • L.M.S. 6 Wheel Milk Van
  • L.M.S. Parcels Van
  • G.W.R. Bogie Milk Van

Detailing is spectacular, with brass, hand painted highlights, filler funnel, instructions, spare wicks, multi-wick burners, and an assortment of paperwork.  We even have the hang tags, as the UK boilers needed to be certified and signed off. The cars are all wood with delicate intricate detailing.

We did not test this steam train. We assume all of the parts are there, however, be aware that they may not all be there and this is sold as is, please see the photos. We looked these over and it appears that even the smallest delicate train pieces are all there. The boxes range from very good to good condition for boxes of this age and come with original cardboard inserts.

All of these pieces are in great to excellent all original condition with no breaks, restorations, repairs, or touch ups. These pieces show the usual patina, fading, dust, chips, scuffs, surface rust, scratches, missing accessories, and wear that are to be expected from age and display. The locomotive is approximately 11 ¼” L and the tender is approximately 7 ¼” We invite you to view the photos to further determine quality and condition.

A brief history of Bassett-Lowke, Ltd. of Northampton, England:

Bassett-Lowke was a toy company that was founded in 1898/1899 in Northampton, England. Bassett-Lowke specialized in model railways, boats, ships, and construction sets. They originally started as a mail-order business, but they also designed and manufactured some of their items.

Like many similar companies in the 1950’s Bassett-Lowke’s products started to decline in popularity which was the beginning of the end. In 1964, the company ceased all retail sales and sold its shops including one of its main shops at High Holborn in London. In 1965, they officially went out of business. From 1966 the company and its designs were bought and passed around, eventually being bought by Corgi in 1996. In 2008, one of Bassett-Lowke’s main competitors Hornby acquired Corgi and revived the brand name in 2020.
