Lehmann Am Pol tin windup No 681 *SOLD*

Lehmann Am Pol tin windup No 681 for sale

Our Lehmann Am Pol is an absolute beauty and a great slice of American History.  The toy traces back to around 1910 when Lehmann chose to commemorate the American explorer Robert E. Peary making it to the North Pole.

The umbrella top depicts the world globe at the time and the apex of the pole; they reached the pole in 1909.

Each figure is dressed in a fur suit and explorer Peary is wearing, of course, a top hat. The three wheeled vehicle is a windup that works by moving the car, allowing steering, raising and lowering Peary’s hat, and then spinning the globe. The mechanism is a bit temperamental but works. All the pieces are there, but the mechanism is just complex.

Peary’s left arm holds a steering column that pulls up and can then re-insert into different drive holes. Each hole allows either a straight path or curved path by turning the front wheel. The column is brass but likely an excellent replacement, as most were lost.

Paint is original and gold flashing is original too. There are scratches to Peary’s arms, a bend to the left rear rim, then the paint is an unusual gray color variation. The globe is in very very good to excellent condition with the requisite Lehmann name stamped on. The tip of the umbrella can extend higher than pictured.

This is a beautiful, historic and desirable Lehmann that is seldom found.  It is worth emphasizing that the globe umbrella is in the best condition we’ve seen in quite some time.  Also worth noting is that the design on the back of this car is an earlier version that isn’t as often seen.

As always, it is fun to mention that the price doesn’t require a buyer’s fee, a tax if out of the state of Florida, and we handle our own shipping for a rounded down fee.
