Rare Vintage 1983 Ertl Hardcastle and McCormick Coyote X Diecast 1:16 Scale with Box and Figure

This is a rare vintage 1983 ERTL Hardcastle and McCormick diecast Coyote X in 1:16 scale with box and loose figure of Mark McCormick. This is marked as #3581 on the box. The box is in good condition, but the car and the figure are loose. They do not appear to be played with and we only removed them for the pictures. We noticed that the driver side “Coyote” sticker is beginning to come up. The car and the figure are completely original with no breaks, repairs, restorations or touch ups. There is minimal scratching and scuffing to the paint, and no dents or dings detected. It is in great shape for its age.

The bottom of the car says, “The ERTL Co.”, “Dyersville, Iowa 52040”, “Made in the U.S.A.”, “1983 Stephen J. Cannell Productions”, “All Rights Reserved”, “A Trademark of Stephen J. Cannell Productions”, and “Licensed by Paramount Pictures Corporation”. The front bumper is marked “3104”. The back of McCormick says, “ERTL” and “Made in Korea”. The car is approximately 13” in length and McCormick is approximately 3 ¾”.

A Brief of History of Ertl and Hardcastle and McCormick:

The Ertl Company was founded by Fred Ertl, Sr. in Dubuque, Iowa in 1945. In 1959, the company moved to a larger facility in Dyersville, Iowa. Ertl switched hands several times since 1945 and was acquired by Tony in 2008. They are best known for their diecast meal alloy collectible replicas/scale models of vehicles and farm equipment.

Wikipedia says that the Coyote was, “The car that McCormick drove, the Coyote X, was built from custom molds based on the McLaren M6GT. The original Coyote X was molded, modified, and assembled by Mike Fennel. The nose, windshield doors, and lower body (minus the ventral intakes) are faithful representations of the McLaren; the cut-down rear deck, however, was a custom component that became a feature on many Manta Montage kits with damaged or removed rear windows. The most noticeable differences between the Coyotes and Mantas are the wheel wells, roll pan height, and shape, and the fact that the Coyote has a one-piece front clip that terminates about an inch before and surrounding the windshield.”

Wikipedia further states that, “Hardcastle and McCormick is an American action/drama television series that aired on ABC from September 18, 1983, through May 5, 1986. The series stars Brian Keith as Judge Milton C. Hardcastle and Daniel Hugh Kelly as ex-con and race car driver Mark “Skid” McCormick. In an interview in the 1980’s, Stephen J. Cannell talks about the show calling it Rolling Thunder, probably the show production title before airing.”
